Tinubu removes the CBN governor from office.

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate suspension of Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The suspension goes into effect immediately.

Willie Bassey announced that the CBN governor’s suspension was based on an ongoing inquiry and anticipated banking sector reforms.

According to PUNCH online, Emefiele was called by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday for a $53 million judgment obligation resulting from Paris Club reimbursements. The presiding judge, Inyang Ekwo, has ordered that Emefiele’s application for stay be denied until he comes in court.

Before his appointment as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from 2014 to 9th of June, 2023 when he was suspended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Godwin Emefiele has over 18 years of banking experience, serving as chief executive officer and group managing director of Zenith Bank Plc, deputy managing director, executive director in charge of corporate banking, treasury, financial control and strategic planning, director at Zenith Bank Plc and Zenith Bank (Gambia) Limited, and director of ACCION Microfinance Bank Limited.
